A K9 deputy responded to a report of a man throwing things out of a third-floor dorm window at a local college. When the deputy contacted the suspect, the deputy noted that the suspect appeared to be under the influence of drugs and hallucinating.
While working a delayed family disturbance call in a grocery store parking lot, an emergency tone-out sounded over our primary radio channel. Dispatch advised that an unarmed security guard working the exterior night watch at a bank on the outskirts of our town had been shot.
At approximately 1630, a woman called 911 out of concern for her son, whom she felt was emotionally disturbed. The mother stated that her son was not armed or violent. Two officers arrived at the scene and made contact with the mother.
A state trooper was on patrol on a state highway when he observed a motorcyclist driving 92mph. The trooper caught up with the motorcycle and activated his emergency lights. The driver pulled onto the shoulder and slowed down, but then accelerated at a high rate of speed.
Around 0230, an officer on patrol initiated a traffic stop on a vehicle that was traveling without its headlights on. The officer utilized a driver side approach and contacted the driver. When the officer asked the driver for his driver’s license, insurance, or any form of identification, the driver replied that he did not have anything with him.
In the early morning hours, state troopers responded to assist local police in locating a vehicle wanted in connection with a hit-and-run crash minutes earlier on [a major interstate]. Troopers found the suspect vehicle abandoned at a car dealership and deployed a K-9 to track the suspect.
Officers received a call for shots fired in the area. They responded to a house for a disturbance involving the individual who fired the shots. Officers were checking the yard while another officer went to the front door to meet the complainant. One officer observed the suspect in the corner of the back yard.
As a proactive patrol officer on the midnight shift, I routinely used pretextual stops to make DWI and drug arrests. In my assigned area, I often parked on a side street with my lights off to monitor a four-way stop intersection on a state road. Traffic was infrequent on this road during the overnight hours as it passed through several miles of residential neighborhoods.
An officer [with a local police department] conducted a traffic stop for a minor traffic violation. There were two occupants in the vehicle. Upon contact, the officer detected the odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle and was immediately backed up by a state trooper.
A patrol officer initiated a traffic stop for a possible DUI on a vehicle that he observed crossing the center line and swerving. When the officer questioned the driver and ordered her out of the vehicle, she refused to comply. At this time, the passenger also became argumentative with the officer.

The system was funded by the COPS Office and developed by the National Policing Institute in collaboration with other national law enforcement organizations. The system is modeled after successful near miss reporting systems used in other high-risk industries.
The National Policing Institute (NPI) is a non-profit research organization based in the Washington, D.C. Metropolitan Area. NPI serves as the administrator of the LEO Near Miss system, independent from all other government and law enforcement bodies to ensure near miss reporting is non-punitive and remains exclusively focused on improving operational safety in law enforcement.
